When going gets tough… tough takes a nap
"When the going gets tough, the tough get going" is an age-old saying, but let’s be honest—sometimes, when the going gets tough, the tough get confused and end up taking a nap instead.
There’s a certain charm to the idea of “toughness” when faced with adversity. You picture someone like Rocky Balboa, powering through life’s punches with a steely resolve, all while wearing a sweatband and some seriously impressive abs. But let’s face it—when tough times arrive, sometimes all you want to do is order a pizza and hope that somehow, magically, everything works itself out.
In reality, the first sign of trouble often sends people into a frenzy of Googling phrases like, “How to be a resilient person” or “What do I do when life feels like a never-ending rollercoaster?” The tough don’t always get going; sometimes, they stand there wondering if maybe it’s better to wait it out from the safety of their sofa or maybe even a good recliner.
Even the most "tough" among us can struggle with the "getting going" part. For instance, there's always that person who, when faced with a stressful situation, says, “I’ll handle this,” and then proceeds to spend 45 minutes deciding on the perfect motivational frame for Instagram. Is that really the “getting going” we’re talking about?
At the end of the day, when tough times hit, it’s not about pushing yourself to be a poster superhero. Sometimes, it's about giving yourself the space to breathe, laugh, and maybe even embrace your inner couch potato. Because while the tough might get going, the best ones also know when to pause for a snack, rest and a good laugh.
